Protecting capital in all market conditions

May 2, 2016

Investors commonly measure volatility by looking at both the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ returns, often referred to as the ‘standard deviation’. Investors concerned with the level of risk within their investments need to be aware of the lesser known risk metric of ‘downside deviation’, which ignores the volatility of the ‘good’ returns and focuses on downside volatility only. Put simply, a lower downside deviation number is better, as this represents a lower volatility of negative returns, thus reducing the impact of any negative returns on the value of a portfolio. NAOS Absolute Opportunities Company Ltd (ASX:NAC) primarily focuses on the preservation of shareholders capital in all market conditions and the generation of meaningful absolute returns. Since its 2014 inception, the NAC portfolio has outperformed the All Ordinaries Accumulation Index (XAOAI) by more than 20% p.a. with a downside deviation of only 2.65% compared to 7.83% for the Index.
